{"id":26452,"date":"2023-06-27T12:03:27","date_gmt":"2023-06-27T16:03:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/?p=26452"},"modified":"2026-01-26T12:24:33","modified_gmt":"2026-01-26T17:24:33","slug":"fair-works-with-clinic-that-provides-human-centered-care","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/fair-works-with-clinic-that-provides-human-centered-care\/","title":{"rendered":"Fair works with clinic that provides \u2018human-centered care\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/magdaleneclinic.com\/\">Magdalene Clinic<\/a>, developed by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.phoenixcenter.org\/\">Phoenix Center<\/a>, Furman University <a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/institute-advancement-community-health\/\">Institute for the Advancement of Community Health<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/prismahealth.org\/\">Prisma Health<\/a>, offers comprehensive care for expectant mothers with substance-use disorder (SUD). Founded in 2015 thanks to a $1.15 million Healthy Greenville Grant, the clinic delivers traditional pregnancy care, social work and peer-support services.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/greenvillejournal.com\/branded-content\/phoenix-center-clinic-gets-expectant-moms-off-drugs\/\">Greenville Journal<\/a> covered the clinic\u2019s services and reached out to Furman\u2019s Melissa Fair, 2010 Furman alumna and community action director for IACH. Citing the need for trauma-informed care, Fair said, \u201cWe create a wraparound supportive environment that looks at (the patient) as a complete and whole person without judgment. We&#8217;re trying to reduce that shame they feel about their own use.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A health and exercise science graduate (now health sciences), Fair joined the IACH in 2016, bringing a wealth of community-based health promotion and evaluation experience through her relationship with LiveWell Greenville and its more than 100 community partnerships. Fair holds a master&#8217;s in public health from the University of South Carolina Arnold School of Public Health and a doctorate from the same in health promotion, education and behavior.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>IACH&#8217;s Melissa Fair cites statistics that demand non-judgmental, trauma-informed care for expectant mothers with SUD.
