Several of them were Sustainability Leadership Initiative (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/2022\/06\/02\/leading-the-way-to-a-sustainable-state\/\">SLI)<\/a> Fellows, graduates of a program led by The Shi Institute and Sustain SC.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis kind of event is important because we are not going to make any progress on these big systemic issues without some thoughtful convening,\u201d said Predmore, who described sustainability as \u201ca human challenge\u201d and said: \u201cRegardless of how the discussions go, what happens here are connections that otherwise wouldn\u2019t happen because these challenges are so big and diverse.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_26184\" style=\"width: 1510px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-26184\" class=\"size-full wp-image-26184 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/218\/2023\/06\/060923_Sustainability-Summit_20.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1500\" height=\"843\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/218\/2023\/06\/060923_Sustainability-Summit_20.jpg 1500w, https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/218\/2023\/06\/060923_Sustainability-Summit_20-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/218\/2023\/06\/060923_Sustainability-Summit_20-1024x575.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/218\/2023\/06\/060923_Sustainability-Summit_20-512x288.jpg 512w, https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/218\/2023\/06\/060923_Sustainability-Summit_20-1280x719.jpg 1280w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 1500px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 1500\/843;\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-26184\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Furman University students who are involved at The Shi Institute for Sustainable Communities listen as a panel discussion is held during the Sustainability in Business Summit at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena in Greenville on Friday, June 9, 2023.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beyond learning directly from industry experts about the latest in sustainability efforts, such as supply chain management and carbon footprint reduction, there was an overall lesson that Predmore hoped the Shi Sustainability Fellows would take from the event.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn South Carolina, there is movement on these things,\u201d he said. \u201cFurman students don\u2019t have to go to California or D.C. or Denver to make a difference.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, as the audience heard from Davis, Furman students, faculty and staff are already making a difference without even leaving campus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The university maintains a Gold rating in the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment &amp; Rating System (STARS) of the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) since 2015, said Davis. Furman is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aashe.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/SustainableCampusIndex-2022.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rated third<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> among baccalaureate institutions by AASHE, and it is the only Top 10 school in the Southeast.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>For Davis, this shows that sustainability is not just an academic subject at Furman.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThat\u2019s an accountability measure, to be sure,\u201d said Davis, who was part of a panel that also included the CEOs of BMW Manufacturing and Milliken &amp; Company. \u201cWe\u2019re living up to what we\u2019re actually teaching our students.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to the school\u2019s many <a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/sustainability\/initiatives\/\">sustainability initiatives<\/a>, Davis also stressed the importance of education, noting Furman\u2019s Bachelor of Science degree in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/academics\/majors-minors-programs\/sustainability-science-major\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sustainability sciences<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 the first such degree offered by a liberal arts and sciences institution in the U.S.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The university has also included a course addressing humans and the natural environment in its general education requirements for all students, said Davis.
