FPA will use its platforms \u2013 including its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/furmanpridealliance\/\">Instagram account<\/a> and the GroupMe chat app \u2013 to share resources, such as information on events and local businesses to support, links to online petitions and facts about the history of Pride Month, Tillman said.<\/p>\n<p>Along with weekly meetings for fellowship and support, the group also focuses on education and activism, working with other organizations within the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/diversity-equity-inclusion\/inclusive-communities\/student-organizations\/\">Student Diversity Council<\/a>. Kenan Jr. Professor of Education. \u201cFor some students, it\u2019s the first time they\u2019ve experienced that sort of freedom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHaving the university say that it\u2019s supporting the community makes a big difference,\u201d said Tillman. \u201cA lot of people feel safer and like they can be more themselves at Furman than at their homes.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Changing with the culture<\/h3>\n<p>FPA\u2019s roots go back to the 1992-1993 school year, when the constitution of the student group Friends of Lesbians and Gays (FLAG) was officially approved by the Association of Furman Students (now known as the Student Government Association or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/2023\/03\/07\/new-sga-executive-council-prepares-to-lead-in-2023-2024\/\">SGA<\/a>).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_26134\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-26134\" class=\"wp-image-26134 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/218\/2023\/06\/FLAG-1993-yearbook.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"357\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/357;\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-26134\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Members of Friends of Lesbians and Gays (FLAG), a new student group, pictured in the 1993 Bonhomie yearbook with faculty advisor Nicholas Radel, a professor of English (top left).<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Several students had approached <a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/people\/nicholas-f-radel\/\">Nicholas Radel<\/a>, a professor of English, about forming the group. Official support from John E. Johns, the university\u2019s president at the time, and other administrators came as the school <a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/about\/history\/\">became independent<\/a> from the South Carolina Baptist Convention in 1992, said Radel, who served as FLAG\u2019s first faculty advisor.<\/p>\n<p>In 2003, FLAG changed its name to the Queer Student Alliance (QSA). Another renaming occurred in 2007, when QSA became Encouraging Respect of Sexualities (EROS). The group has been known as FPA since the 2017-2018 academic year.<\/p>\n<p>Much of this history is outlined in the <a href=\"https:\/\/storymaps.arcgis.com\/stories\/861372af3b984d25a81b28c40b0f6b69\">LGBTQIA+ at Furman<\/a> timeline, which displays material from the Furman&#8217;s Special Collections and Archives.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe country\u2019s attitudes toward the LGBTQIA+ community have changed markedly over the past three decades,\u201d Henderson said. \u201cFurman\u2019s public support of FPA is a great example of how the university has embraced and sometimes even helped spark those changes.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>A safe place<\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_26151\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-26151\" class=\"wp-image-26151 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/218\/2023\/06\/Furman-Pride-Buttons.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"214\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/214;\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-26151\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Furman pride buttons<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The group, which is open to all LGBTQIA+ people and allies, will resume its weekly meetings in Fall 2023.
