Five members of Furman\u2019s Class of 2024 have received one of the university\u2019s highest honors. Furman Fellowships<\/a> are awarded each year to recognize seniors\u2019 accomplishments, contributions and potential, with a\u00a0$10,000 award to pursue their academic, creative and professional pathways.<\/p>\n

To apply, each of this year\u2019s awardees proposed a project that they will lead during their senior year and ultimately present at Furman Engaged<\/a>, the university’s annual campus-wide celebration of high-impact learning experiences, in April 2024, when a new class of Furman Fellows will be announced.<\/p>\n

The Furman Fellowship is an endowed scholarship fund founded in 2004 with a gift from Trustee Emeritus Robert H. Buckman<\/a> and his wife, Joyce Mollerup. The fund was established to recognize seniors who use their creativity and imagination to make a difference in the school and the lives of others, said Buckman, who praised the awardees as \u201coutstanding examples of the Furman student body.\u201d<\/p>\n

Julian Ashby \u201924<\/p><\/div>\n

Julian Ashby,<\/strong> a physics major<\/a>, will develop his \u201cPower of Pedaling\u201d project to generate clean energy in communities with limited access to electricity by attaching small-scale generators to the bicycles often used for transportation in those areas. \u201cA charged battery can be removed from the device at the end of the day to power a lamp or cooktop in the home, and suddenly bikes are serving the dual purpose of mobility and clean electricity production,\u201d said Ashby.<\/p>\n

Jayden Hill-Mims \u201924<\/p><\/div>\n

Jaeyden Hill-Mims,<\/strong> a politics and international affairs<\/a> and Africana studies<\/a> double major, has proposed \u201cThe Bridge,\u201d a project intended to \u201cestablish a connection of familiarity, understanding and trust\u201d between people of color and local police officers. Monthly gatherings and dialogues can \u201cshift the narrative of \u2018all cops are bad\u2019 and that \u2018Black means threat,\u2019\u201d said Hill-Mims, who plans to use a summer internship in the 13th Judicial Circuit Solicitor\u2019s Office<\/a> to begin networking.<\/p>\n

Lydia McCarty \u201924<\/p><\/div>\n

Lydia McCarty,<\/strong> a French<\/a> and politics and international affairs double major, will focus on \u201cConsent Education at Furman,\u201d aimed at increasing campus safety by developing a comprehensive program for students entering the university. McCarty plans to collaborate with students, professors and academic deans to research effective means of consent education \u201cto equip students with knowledge so they can make the best decisions for themselves both while they are at Furman and long-term.\u201d<\/p>\n

James O\u2019Connor \u201924<\/p><\/div>\n

James O\u2019Connor,<\/strong> a business administration major<\/a>, proposed \u201cArtistic Flow\u201d to \u201cprovide access to an artistic experience and a creative outlet to participants to improve their mental health and individual growth.\u201d By creating a mobile art studio equipped with potter\u2019s wheels, easels, chairs and other art supplies, O\u2019Connor intends to spread the mental and emotional benefits he gained in his own artistic pursuits<\/a>, including \u201cstress relief and improved focus and concentration, self-expression and increased self-awareness,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Nicole Warren \u201924<\/p><\/div>\n

Nicole Warren,<\/strong> a psychology<\/a> and French<\/a> double major, plans to spread awareness of autism spectrum disorder and other disabilities through a \u201cDisability Allies\u201d program. Working with Furman\u2019s Student Office of Accessibility Resources (SOAR<\/a>) and the Center for Academic Success<\/a>, Warren envisions a series of workshops and dialogues that will eventually lead to an official certification for students, faculty and staff as a Disability Ally, \u201cfostering a campus which includes those with disabilities we cannot outwardly see,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
