{"id":26093,"date":"2023-06-07T15:11:20","date_gmt":"2023-06-07T19:11:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/?p=26093"},"modified":"2023-06-12T14:04:33","modified_gmt":"2023-06-12T18:04:33","slug":"five-seniors-selected-for-10000-furman-fellowships","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/five-seniors-selected-for-10000-furman-fellowships\/","title":{"rendered":"Five seniors selected for $10,000 Furman Fellowships"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Five members of Furman\u2019s Class of 2024 have received one of the university\u2019s highest honors. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/academic-affairs\/furman-fellows\/\">Furman Fellowships<\/a> are awarded each year to recognize seniors\u2019 accomplishments, contributions and potential, with a\u00a0$10,000 award to pursue their academic, creative and professional pathways.<\/p>\n<p>To apply, each of this year\u2019s awardees proposed a project that they will lead during their senior year and ultimately present at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/furman-engaged\/\">Furman Engaged<\/a>, the university&#8217;s annual campus-wide celebration of high-impact learning experiences, in April 2024, when a new class of Furman Fellows will be announced.<\/p>\n<p>The Furman Fellowship is an endowed scholarship fund founded in 2004 with a gift from Trustee Emeritus <a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/people\/robert-h-buckman\/\">Robert H. Buckman<\/a> and his wife, Joyce Mollerup. The fund was established to recognize seniors who use their creativity and imagination to make a difference in the school and the lives of others, said Buckman, who praised the awardees as \u201coutstanding examples of the Furman student body.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_26094\" style=\"width: 135px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-26094\" class=\"size-full wp-image-26094 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/218\/2023\/06\/Ashby-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"125\" height=\"166\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 125px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 125\/166;\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-26094\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Julian Ashby \u201924<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Julian Ashby,<\/strong> a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/academics\/physics\/\">physics major<\/a>, will develop his \u201cPower of Pedaling\u201d project to generate clean energy in communities with limited access to electricity by attaching small-scale generators to the bicycles often used for transportation in those areas. \u201cA charged battery can be removed from the device at the end of the day to power a lamp or cooktop in the home, and suddenly bikes are serving the dual purpose of mobility and clean electricity production,\u201d said Ashby.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_26095\" style=\"width: 135px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-26095\" class=\"size-full wp-image-26095 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/218\/2023\/06\/Jaeyden-Hill-Mims_02.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"125\" height=\"156\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 125px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 125\/156;\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-26095\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jayden Hill-Mims \u201924<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Jaeyden Hill-Mims,<\/strong> a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/academics\/politics-international-affairs\/\">politics and international affairs<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/academics\/majors-minors-programs\/africana-studies-major\/\">Africana studies<\/a> double major, has proposed \u201cThe Bridge,\u201d a project intended to \u201cestablish a connection of familiarity, understanding and trust\u201d between people of color and local police officers.
