{"id":2524,"date":"2013-02-07T22:40:17","date_gmt":"2013-02-08T03:40:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/2013\/02\/07\/high-noon-analyzing-the-federal-reserve\/"},"modified":"2024-01-28T22:17:24","modified_gmt":"2024-01-29T03:17:24","slug":"high-noon-analyzing-the-federal-reserve","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/high-noon-analyzing-the-federal-reserve\/","title":{"rendered":"Analyzing the Federal Reserve"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Winter\/spring schedule of lectures<\/p>\n<p>The Federal Reserve has said it will continue buying bonds until there\u2019s substantial improvement in the U.S. labor markets.\u00a0 Furman economist Bruce Brown will talk about whether that\u2019s a good idea when he delivers the High Noon lecture Wednesday, Feb. 13 at the Upcountry History Museum\/Furman.<\/p>\n<p>His talk, \u201cThe Fed\u2019s \u2018New\u2019 Unemployment Target and the Federal Debt,\u201d begins at noon.<\/p>\n<p>In December the Fed announced it will keep interest rates low as long as the unemployment rate stays above 6.5% and inflation stays below 2.5%. The Fed keeps interest rates low by buying U.S. Treasury and Treasury Agency securities, which is financing much of the current deficit.\u00a0 Is this good policy, dangerous policy\u2014or good and dangerous policy?<\/p>\n<p>The winter\/spring schedule consists of eight noon lectures on Wednesdays that will run consecutively through March 13.
