Mark Kilstofte<\/a>,\u00a0professor of music at Furman University and composer in residence at the university since 2021, has been praised for his compositions that are “exciting and beautiful, consistently gripping,” according to the San Francisco Chronicle. Works by the 31-year Furman veteran have garnered many honors including the Rome Prize, Guggenheim Fellowship, ASCAP’s Rudolf Nissim Award, Goddard Lieberson Fellowship and Charles Ives Scholarship from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, Copland House Residence Award (four times) and the Gardner Read and Francis & William Schuman Fellowships from the MacDowell Colony.<\/p>\n

Recent and upcoming performances of Kilstofte’s work demonstrate that he is as prolific as he is respected in the music world.<\/p>\n

On March 5, the S:t Johannes Kammark\u00f6r, under the direction of Christian Schultze, gave the European and Swedish premieres of “Everyone’s Voice<\/a>,” a work commissioned and debuted last spring by the Greenville Chorale. On April 1, \u201cEnfold Us<\/a>\u201d was featured by\u00a0NEW Voices<\/a> (Northeast Wisconsin Vocal Artists) at Lawrence Memorial Chapel in Appleton, Wisconsin. The Chatham Choir at Chatham University and director Stacey Brett Davern performed \u201cEveryone\u2019s Voice\u201d in Campbell Memorial Chapel in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on April 15. The Juniata College Concert Choir (Huntingdon, Pennsylvania) and director Russell Shelley performed \u201cEveryone\u2019s Voice\u201d throughout Barbados during their spring concert tour.<\/p>\n

\u201cEveryone\u2019s Voice\u201d will receive its Danish premiere in Malm\u00f6\u2019s Tyska kyrkan and Copenhagen\u2019s Kastrup Kirke by the R\u00e5by Kammers\u00e5ngare under the leadership of Alexander Einarsson. The war in Ukraine broke out as Kilstofte was completing \u201cEveryone\u2019s Voice,” and its text, especially its reference to the wordless song arising from the trenches of warfare, took on added meaning, Kilstofte said. All sales<\/a> of the work go toward supporting Ukrainian relief efforts.<\/p>\n

May 7<\/p>\n

\u201cCaritas<\/a>,\u201d commissioned as part of Furman’s yearlong commemoration of the 50th anniversary of desegregation at the institution and in honor of Lillian Brock Flemming, Sarah Reese and Joseph Vaughn, will be performed by\u00a0I Cantanti Chamber Choir<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Peter Schleif<\/a> in a program of works by St. Olaf alumni titled \u201cSongs from the Hill\u201d at Bethel Lutheran Church, Northfield, Minnesota.<\/p>\n

May 19 and 21<\/p>\n

\u201cEveryone\u2019s Voice,\u201d will receive its New York premiere by the\u00a0New Amsterdam Singers<\/a>\u00a0under the direction of\u00a0Clara Longstreth<\/a>\u00a0at\u00a0Broadway Presbyterian Church.<\/p>\n

May 21<\/p>\n

\u201cTo Music<\/a>,\u201d commissioned by the Furman Singers, will be performed by the\u00a0Florilegium Chamber Choir<\/a>\u00a0at New York\u2019s Trinity Lutheran Church under the baton of Furman alumnus\u00a0Knox Sutterfield<\/a>\u00a0\u201912.<\/p>\n

June 25<\/p>\n

Director\u00a0Rodney Wynkoop<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0Vocal Arts Ensemble of Durham<\/a>\u00a0will give the North Carolina premiere of “Everyone\u2019s Voice” during its annual summer concert in Duke University Chapel.<\/p>\n

November 3<\/p>\n

\u201cOf Rivers Within<\/a>,\u201d a 40-minute oratorio for soprano, chorus and orchestra, will be presented by the\u00a0Amarillo Master Chorale<\/a>\u00a0at historic\u00a0First Baptist Church<\/a> in Amarillo, Texas. The performance will be led by conductor and Furman alumnus Nathan Fryml<\/a>\u00a0\u201909 and will feature soprano soloist and alumna\u00a0Jazmin Black Grollemund<\/a>\u00a0\u201910. The concert, centering on themes of water and renewal, will benefit\u00a025:35 Water<\/a>, an organization dedicated to providing clean drinking water to the citizens of Uganda.<\/p>\n
