{"id":25096,"date":"2023-05-01T10:40:59","date_gmt":"2023-05-01T14:40:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/?p=25096"},"modified":"2023-05-01T18:20:10","modified_gmt":"2023-05-01T22:20:10","slug":"legacy-honor-societies-combine-ranks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/legacy-honor-societies-combine-ranks\/","title":{"rendered":"Legacy honor societies combine ranks, elect new members"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sixteen Furman University juniors and two seniors have been selected into a new academic honor society, the Quaternion Senior Order, or QSO.<\/p>\n<p>The QSO combines Quaternion, a society previously reserved for men founded in 1903, with Senior Order, a society reserved for women founded in 1937.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA thorough review of the historical documents by leaders in both organizations revealed that over their nearly two centuries of combined existence, the gender-specific honor societies had mirrored one another in substantial ways,\u201d said Scott Henderson, the William R. Kenan Jr. Professor of Education and co-president of QSO.<\/p>\n<p>Unifying the societies allows members and alumni to recognize each organization\u2019s rich history while being part of a new QSO community that honors the highest achievement of all students, Henderson added.<\/p>\n<p>QSO will induct 16 rising seniors each year with the option to add honorary members. The inaugural QSO welcomed 18 new members, two of them seniors, in a March 26 ceremony. They are:<\/p>\n<p>Miles Baker \u201924<br \/>\nBritany Bonilla-Martinez \u201924<br \/>\nConor Bready \u201924<br \/>\nLouisa Brown \u201924<br \/>\nAlex Bussom \u201924<br \/>\nKevin Carberry \u201924<br \/>\nBiruja Dahal \u201924<br \/>\nAdrian Gonazlez \u201924<br \/>\nJaeyden Hill-Mims \u201924<br \/>\nKatherine Hough \u201924<br \/>\nAbijah Leamon \u201924<br \/>\nFrances North \u201923<br \/>\nLexi Rojas \u201924<br \/>\nJohn Roper \u201923<br \/>\nBotamina Sorial \u201924<br \/>\nKelsey Sumter \u201924<br \/>\nAsh Tillman \u201924<br \/>\nNicole Warren \u201924<\/p>\n<p>Jocelyn Boulware Bruce \u201917, assistant director for social justice education, and Kim Keefer, director of the Shucker Center for Leadership Development, were inducted as honorary members.<\/p>\n<p>While many of the rites and traditions of the former groups will change with a unified organization, the principles underpinning both have not, said Maya Russell, pre-law advisor at Furman and co-president of QSO.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cQSO identifies a select group of students based on their outstanding dedication to leadership, determination as a scholar, discipline to serve the needs of others and devotion to and love for the university and its broader community,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Quaternion and Senior Order merge to form QSO.
