{"id":24127,"date":"2023-03-29T14:13:46","date_gmt":"2023-03-29T18:13:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/?p=24127"},"modified":"2024-03-26T16:12:00","modified_gmt":"2024-03-26T20:12:00","slug":"triptych","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/triptych\/","title":{"rendered":"TRIPtych: The Struggle for a Fair Chance"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><strong>On a Friday afternoon in early October, I packed a bag, climbed into a van of students and staff, and traveled to a farm in the middle of nowhere.<\/strong> Americus, Georgia, was the first destination of<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">our Immigration Pilgrimage Through Georgia, which included the first of many meaningful, poignant and beautiful experiences. From left: Maria Balderas \u201925, Pratik Shrestha \u201926 and Xavier Johnson \u201924.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Along our five-day trip, we met with farmers and volunteers who house immigrants, packed donated items for detainees, heard the unique stories behind city murals, and witnessed the love and beauty of Latin American cultures. It was a privilege to peek into the nuanced<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">experiences of so many, and I could not help but realize how their truths and stories are often distorted or obscured.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>My most impactful experience was speaking with an inmate in a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility in a remote area. He had been detained for over eight months, and I was his first visitor. How can I use my activism and my craft to support and recognize those affected by immigration policy?
