{"id":23990,"date":"2023-03-23T15:45:52","date_gmt":"2023-03-23T19:45:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/?p=23990"},"modified":"2023-05-09T14:15:31","modified_gmt":"2023-05-09T18:15:31","slug":"adi-dubash-secures-funding-for-cancer-research","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/adi-dubash-secures-funding-for-cancer-research\/","title":{"rendered":"Adi Dubash secures funding for undergraduate research"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Adi Dubash, the Henry Keith and Ellen Hard Townes Associate Professor of Biology at Furman University, was recognized in <a href=\"https:\/\/mailchi.mp\/uscmed\/news-for-march-23-2023?e=4bcd61d2c1\">SC INBRE Weekly News<\/a>, which announced two awards he has received to support his research.<\/p>\n<p>The first is an internal, one-year, Furman-granted INBRE Faculty Fellows award for $10,500, which will help fund Dubash&#8217;s cardiac research.<\/p>\n<p>The second is a three-year R15 award from the NIH National Institute for General Medicine Sciences (NIGMS) for $364,000, which will support Dubash&#8217;s cancer research. Specifically, the NIH NIGMS grant funds Dubash&#8217;s project focused on desmosome-regulated ECM attachment and migration in keratinocytes and epidermal cancer cells.<\/p>\n<p>Dubash, a former SC INBRE Developmental Research Project awardee, expressed his appreciation for SC INBRE in a communique. \u201cI want to sincerely thank you for all your support and continually helpful feedback over the past few years,&#8221; he wrote. &#8220;There is simply no way I could have successfully competed for R15 funding without my prior INBRE awards. I am deeply indebted and grateful to you and everyone on the SC INBRE team for helping me achieve this milestone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>An R15 is a\u00a0NIH Research Enhancement Award that supports small-scale research projects at educational institutions that provide baccalaureate or advanced degrees for a significant number of the nation\u2019s research scientists but that have not been major recipients of NIH support.<\/p>\n<p>SC INBRE&#8217;s goal is to increase the research capacity in the biomedical sciences across the state. SC INBRE is funded through an $18.9 million grant from the NIH IDeA Networks of Biomedical Research Excellence (INBRE) and consists of 14 member institutions.
