The 2023 theme is \u201cEmbrace Equity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cInternational Women\u2019s Day\u00a0(March 8) is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women,&#8221; states the\u00a0IWD organization. &#8220;The day also marks a call to action for accelerating women&#8217;s equality. IWD has occurred for well over a century, with the first IWD gathering in 1911 supported by over a million people. Today, IWD belongs to all groups collectively everywhere. IWD is not country, group or organization specific.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Generations of Furman women have broken barriers, overcome systemic and social obstacles, and made a profound impact on the world. In honor of this day, these are just a few of the remarkable women leaders in the Furman community and university history, starting with Furman\u2019s first female president, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/people\/elizabeth-davis\/\">Elizabeth Davis<\/a><\/strong>. Others include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/furman-magazine\/2022-spring\/stories\/bold-moves\/\"><strong>Mary Camilla Judson<\/strong>,<\/a> \u201cLady principal\u201d of the Greenville Baptist Female College in 1878, a position she held until 1912<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/1970\/01\/01\/furman-to-honor-sarah-reese-and-lillian-brock-flemming\/\"><strong>Sarah Reese \u201971 H\u201914<\/strong><\/a> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/1970\/01\/01\/furman-to-honor-sarah-reese-and-lillian-brock-flemming\/\">Lillian Brock Flemming \u201971 M\u201975 H\u201914<\/a><\/strong>, among the first Black students to attend Furman<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/2021\/01\/05\/kim-jackson-06-becomes-georgias-first-openly-gay-state-senator\/\"><strong>Kim Jackson \u201906<\/strong><\/a>, Georgia\u2019s first openly gay state senator and one of only three nationwide<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/2021\/10\/04\/fran-ligler-72-wins-award-from-american-chemical-society\/\"><strong>Fran Ligler <\/strong><\/a><strong>\u2019<a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/2021\/10\/04\/fran-ligler-72-wins-award-from-american-chemical-society\/\">72<\/a><\/strong>, groundbreaking scientist and National Inventors Hall of Fame inductee<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/2022\/04\/20\/krista-just-to-be-furman-rotcs-first-ever-woman-u-s-army-infantry-officer\/\"><strong>Krista Just \u201922<\/strong><\/a><strong>,<\/strong> Furman ROTC\u2019s first female U.S. Army infantry officer<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/2021\/01\/29\/des-moines-university-president-angela-franklin-81-leads-historic-transformation\/\"><strong>Angela\u00a0Walker Franklin \u201981<\/strong><\/a><strong>,<\/strong> the first African American female president of Des Moines University<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/furman-magazine\/2022-fall\/stories\/lt-col-sarah-m-whitten\/\"><strong> Col. Sarah M.
