{"id":23570,"date":"2023-03-07T17:43:39","date_gmt":"2023-03-07T22:43:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/?p=23570"},"modified":"2023-03-08T13:18:41","modified_gmt":"2023-03-08T18:18:41","slug":"new-sga-executive-council-prepares-to-lead-in-2023-2024","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/new-sga-executive-council-prepares-to-lead-in-2023-2024\/","title":{"rendered":"New student government officers prepare for 2023-2024 term"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The results of the elections held on Feb. 27 and 28 are in, and four students are now preparing to take their place on Furman\u2019s Student Government Association Executive Council for the 2023-2024 academic year.<\/p>\n<p>The other members of the SGA for next year \u2013 four representatives each for the Classes of 2024, 2025 and 2026 \u2013 will be determined by elections on March 21-22. Elections for Class of 2027 representatives will be held after the first-year students arrive in Fall 2023.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Meredith Ervin \u201924,<\/strong> a philosophy major and pre-health student, will serve as next Furman\u2019s student body president. Ervin, the current student body vice president, will take over for current student body president Josh Swope \u201923.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Yaseen Echekki \u201925,<\/strong> a health sciences major, will succeed Ervin as SGA vice president.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Andrew Cooter \u201925,<\/strong> a sustainability science major, will be the next SGA treasurer. Now serving as a sophomore class representative, Cooter will succeed current SGA Treasurer Emmaline Hardin-Parker \u201923.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Carly Gillis \u201925,<\/strong> an English major and current sophomore class representative, will succeed chemistry major Karisha Brown \u201924 as SGA secretary.<\/p>\n<p>Swope announced the next executive council in an email to all students on March 2, saying he was \u201cincredibly proud of everyone who campaigned in this election.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Class representative candidates will begin campaigning once classes resume after Spring Break on March 13, said Swope, who encouraged students to \u201cmake a lasting and positive impact beyond your years at Furman and represent the student voice to the administration.\u201d Students can view the candidates\u2019 campaign speeches and submit their votes on the <a href=\"https:\/\/furman.campuslabs.com\/engage\/\">SyncDin student portal<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>SGA\u2019s mission is \u201cto be a proactive governing body that represents Furman\u2019s diverse student population and contributes to the positive development of the university community,\u201d according to the organization\u2019s constitution.
