{"id":22981,"date":"2023-02-10T13:29:00","date_gmt":"2023-02-10T18:29:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/?p=22981"},"modified":"2023-02-10T13:29:00","modified_gmt":"2023-02-10T18:29:00","slug":"deljohy-meralus-receives-scholarship-from-council-of-independent-colleges-ups-foundation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/deljohy-meralus-receives-scholarship-from-council-of-independent-colleges-ups-foundation\/","title":{"rendered":"Deljohy Meralus receives scholarship from Council of Independent Colleges\/UPS Foundation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For Deljohy Meralus \u201925, the scholarship from the Council of Independent Colleges\/UPS Foundation is more than a tidy sum to help cover college expenses; it is a \u201cbreath of fresh air.\u201d In the thick of a tough semester transitioning from health sciences to neuroscience, the Greenville native admits things can get a bit discouraging and overwhelming. \u201cThe award is a subtle reminder that my hard work doesn\u2019t go unseen,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Meralus is just one recipient of more than 20 $3,200 scholarships awarded across the state and made possible through a partnership between the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scicu.org\/\">South Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cic.edu\/programs\/state-councils\/educational-endowment#:~:text=In%20the%201970%E2%80%99s%2C%20UPS%20began%20a%20remarkable%20program,Education%20%28FIHE%29%2C%20which%20merged%20into%20CIC%20in%202010\">CIC\/UPS Educational Endowment<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>When she\u2019s not hitting the books, she\u2019s hitting the gym. Besides working out at the PAC, Meralus loves to read, hang out at Furman Lake, and for audiences consisting of close friends in the dorm, she\u2019ll sing tunes to karaoke, one of her \u201chidden talents,\u201d she reveals. Her favorite lately is \u201cMy Mind\u201d by Yebba.<\/p>\n<p>Born to Haitian parents, Meralus attended Greenville Senior High School, graduating early. She spent her freshman year off campus, making 2022-2023 the first year she has experienced residential college life. \u201cI\u2019ve made a lot of friends for sure,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>She has forged relationships with faculty, too.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDr. Teresa Cosby (Department of Politics and International Affairs) has been with me since the beginning, helping me figure out what my passion really is and what I want to do,\u201d she said. \u201cDr. Kaniqua Robinson (Department of Anthropology) has been welcoming and understanding from the minute I met her. She\u2019s always smiling and speaking life into you or any of her students.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With friends, faculty and family in her corner, things are going well for Meralus, who eventually sees herself attending med school to become a neurosurgeon. \u201cFurman is a great place, it\u2019s a great community, and I\u2019m excited about this college journey,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The SCICU, in conjunction with the CIC\/UPS Educational Endowment, awards scholarships to member institutions.
