Two compositions by Mark Kilstofte<\/a>, composer in residence in Furman\u2019s Department of Music, are receiving recognition in concert and on the festival circuit.<\/p>\n

His a cappella choral piece \u201cEnfold Us\u201d will be performed during two holiday concerts by Bel Canto, a vocal chamber ensemble in Napa Valley, California. \u201cEnfold Us<\/a>\u201d was originally commissioned for a 2021 performance to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Petri S\u00e5ngare, a vocal choir in Malm\u00f6, Sweden. Due to the pandemic, the piece had its world premiere from a commercial parking garage in Malm\u00f6, and the performance is still available to watch online<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The text of \u201cEnfold Us,\u201d written by composer Leslie Bassett, Kilstofte\u2019s former teacher at the University of Michigan, \u201coffers refuge and rootedness in the midst of uncertain times,\u201d Kilstofte said. \u201cI confess that it reawakened something in me that had been dormant for too long a time.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Bel Canto performances<\/a> are scheduled for its two \u201cSing We Now of Christmas\u201d concerts on Friday, Dec. 2 and Sunday, Dec. 4.<\/p>\n

Another a capella piece by Kilstofte, \u201cTo Music,\u201d<\/a> recently received Honorable Mention in the RED NOTE New Music Festival Composition Competition<\/a> at Illinois State University in Normal, Illinois. \u201cTo Music\u201d was commissioned for the Furman Singers\u2019 Spring 2009 tour by conductor Bingham Vick Jr., professor emeritus of music.<\/p>\n

The text of \u201cTo Music,\u201d by Austrian poet Rainer Maria Rilke, \u201cemphasizes stasis, timelessness, the infinite \u2013 music that is in us and of us, but also beyond us \u2013 and honors a conductor [Vick] whose career has been the embodiment of the very art he serves so nobly,\u201d said Kilstofte.<\/p>\n

In a New York Times review of a 2011 performance<\/a>, critic Allan Kozinn described \u201cTo Music” as \u201ca piece couched in gentle, strikingly beautiful chordal textures.\u201d<\/p>\n
