{"id":2105,"date":"2014-03-21T20:41:07","date_gmt":"2014-03-22T00:41:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/2016\/02\/17\/professor-einstein-wins-national-mentor-award\/"},"modified":"2022-11-07T19:26:51","modified_gmt":"2022-11-08T00:26:51","slug":"professor-einstein-wins-national-mentor-award","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/professor-einstein-wins-national-mentor-award\/","title":{"rendered":"Professor Einstein wins national mentor award"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_10593\" style=\"width: 220px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/218\/2022\/08\/gil-einstein3.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10593\" class=\"size-full wp-image-10593 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/218\/2022\/08\/gil-einstein3.jpg\" alt=\"gil-einstein3\" width=\"210\" height=\"263\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 210px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 210\/263;\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-10593\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr. Gil Einstein<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Dr. Gil Einstein, a professor of psychology at Furman University, has been chosen as the recipient of the 2014 Mentor Award from the Association for Psychological Science (APS).<\/p>\n<p>Einstein, who has been a member of the Furman faculty for more than 35 years, was honored for his outstanding work mentoring students at the university.\u00a0 His nomination included letters from 47 former research students who have gone on to pursue careers in the sciences.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t believe there is a single higher award Gil could receive from the field, and it shows that Furman\u2019s Psychology Department has some of the best faculty in the nation,\u201d said Michael\u00a0Scullin, Ph.D., a 2007 Furman graduate who is a post-doctoral fellow in the Department of Neurology at the Emory University School of Medicine.<\/p>\n<p>Einstein is only the fourth recipient of the award from any college or university, and the only one to come from a primarily undergraduate institution.\u00a0 The other recipients have been from major research universities with Ph.D. programs\u2014University of California-Berkeley, University of Connecticut, and the University of Pennsylvania.<\/p>\n<p>The annual lifetime achievement award was established by the APS Board of Directors to honor members of its discipline who help students and others discover and pursue their career and research goals.\u00a0 According to Alan Kraut, Executive Director of APS, Einstein is an \u201cinspirational researcher who influences larger groups in the field\u201d and someone \u201cwho transforms the careers\u201d of the students he works with.<\/p>\n<p>Einstein will be honored during the opening ceremony of the 2014 APS Annual Convention in San Francisco May 22-25.<\/p>\n<p>Einstein is the William M. Kenan, Jr., Professor of Psychology at Furman.\u00a0 He joined the faculty in 1977 after receiving his Ph.D. from the University of Colorado.\u00a0 In addition to garnering international acclaim for his research about memory, he has published six books and more than 100 chapters and articles, and has collaborated with scientists across the nation and abroad who study memory.<\/p>\n<p>He has also co-authored more than 30 publications with students, and has also collaborated with students on dozens of conference presentations at the national and regional levels.
