{"id":2062,"date":"2014-03-31T13:36:11","date_gmt":"2014-03-31T17:36:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/2016\/05\/13\/furman-hosts-raider-challenge\/"},"modified":"2022-11-07T18:02:39","modified_gmt":"2022-11-07T23:02:39","slug":"furman-hosts-raider-challenge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/furman-hosts-raider-challenge\/","title":{"rendered":"Furman hosts Raider Challenge"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>More than 100 Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps cadets from 10 high schools as far away as Alaska gathered on Furman University\u2019s campus for the annual Furman Paladin Battalion Raider Challenge held Saturday, March 1.<\/p>\n<p>The day\u2019s events, planned entirely by Furman ROTC cadets, \u00a0presented high school cadets with a variety of physical challenges while teaching the importance of teamwork and providing a glimpse into ROTC programs at the college level.<\/p>\n<p>Participating cadets came from high schools including Landrum, Pickens, Blythewood, Spartanburg, Clyde A. Erwin, Chesnee, Lugoff-Elgin, Liberty, Charles D. Owen, and Bethel High School from Alaska.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are very proud to host these teams of JROTC cadets on the Furman campus each year,\u201d said Lieutenant Colonel Tom Gilleran, professor of military science. \u201cOur cadet leaders experience the complexities of planning, resourcing, executing and scoring a large training event.\u00a0 Our younger cadets get the opportunity to interact with and help motivate the competitors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The day started out with a modified Army physical fitness test, then challenged teams to construct and deconstruct a rope bridge over a stream in the shortest amount of time possible. The competition concluded with \u201cThe Commanders\u2019 Course,\u201d a six event obstacle course that included everything from log carrying to a tire pull.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thoroughly enjoyed working the Raider Challenge for the first time this year.
