Big data and how to manage it \u2013 that was the essence of a gathering that took place at Furman 101 in downtown Greenville Tuesday evening, Oct. 25. Students studying data analytics at Furman, faculty, administrators and area employers met to discuss the new academic minor, the needs of employers, opportunities for collaboration, and full-time and internship options.<\/p>\n
Nearly 50 attendees gathered at Furman\u2019s downtown Greenville event space, 101 North Main St. in the One City Plaza. Representatives from BMW, Michelin, Prisma Health, Samsung and OOBE were on hand to give students a corporate view of employment possibilities in the field, while administrators and faculty spoke about the multidisciplinary minor and The Furman Advantage, the university’s personalized four-year pathway to graduation.<\/p>\n
Kevin Hutson, Furman mathematics professor, said the energy at the event was palpable.<\/p>\n
“Students were able to walk around and have face-to-face conversations with employers who use data analytics in their job on a daily basis,” he said. “The companies commented to me that they enjoyed having concentrated conversations with interested faculty and impressive student candidates. The faculty-company interactions were creative, with a lot of brainstorming about possibilities from sharing datasets for class projects and summer research to more collaborative long-term projects with faculty.”<\/p>\n
