\"les-miserables\"<\/a>Furman University\u2019s Pauper Players will present the epic musical, \u201cLes Miserables,\u201d at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 7 and Feb. 8 at the university\u2019s McAlister Auditorium.<\/p>\n

The international hit musical, directed by Rebecca Shield \u201914, will feature nearly 80 Furman students participating as cast, crew, singers or musicians. \u00a0The 20-piece orchestra will perform on stage alongside a large choir, keeping the music as the focus of the production.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe music is the blood that gives life to this timeless story of love, grace, and redemption,\u201d said Shield, who spent last summer on Broadway as a summer production associate with Disney Theatrical Group in New York City. \u201cThe score is absolutely beautiful; we\u2019re using an updated score from 2010, one that most people haven\u2019t heard live.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cLes Miserables\u201d is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International and features music by Claude-Michel Sch\u00f6nberg, original French lyrics by Alain Boublil and Jean-Marc Natel, with an English-language libretto by Herbert Kretzmer.<\/p>\n

One of the most popular musicals in the world, \u201cLes Miserables,\u201d adapted from Victor Hugo\u2019s famous novel, follows Jean Valjean\u2019s lifelong struggle for redemption as he is pursued by the relentless police inspector Javert during some of the most tumultuous years in French history.<\/p>\n

The Pauper Players\u2019 production features Alex Mason \u201916 as Jean Valjean, Josh Thomason \u201914 as Javert, Jacqueline Abernathy \u201915 as Fantine, Caroline LeGrand \u201917 and Kerby Baier \u201917 as Cosette, Ben Keiper \u201914 and Morgan Voke as Monsieur and Madame Thenardier, Casey Fowler \u201916 as Eponine, and Cody Evins \u201916 as Enjolras. Andrew Cooter, a fifth-grader at Christ Church Episcopal School, plays the role of young revolutionary Gavroche. Music direction is by Philip Reed \u201915 and concert master is James Masannotti \u201815.<\/p>\n

Les Miserables follows the Players\u2019 successful student-run production of Stephen Sondheim\u2019s musical, Company<\/i>, in September. One of the goals of the Players is to provide motivated students with the opportunity to sharpen their skills in leadership, communication, performance, cooperation and responsibility.<\/p>\n

Furman\u2019s Pauper Players was founded in 1992 by Mary Mitchell Campbell \u201996, now a New York City-based music director who recently served as conductor and music director for the Broadway shows, Big Fish<\/i> and The Addams Family<\/i>.<\/p>\n

General admission tickets for this weekend\u2019s production of Les Miserables are $10 for adults and $5 for Furman students, faculty, staff, children and seniors.
