Secretary Duncan, You Can\u2019t Handle the Evidence,\u201d which challenged U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan\u2019s support of Common Core academic standards.<\/p>\n<p>The Orwell award, established in 1975, recognizes an author, editor or producer who has made outstanding contributions to the honesty and clarity in public language through critical analysis of public discourse. Thomas will receive the award Nov. 24 at the 2013 NCTE Annual Convention in Boston.<\/p>\n<p>Before joining the Furman education faculty in 2002, Thomas taught high school English for 18 years in rural South Carolina.
