Thompson Gallery hours are 9 a.m.\u20135 p.m., Monday through Friday.<\/p>\n<p>A reception and gallery talk by Gambrell, a 2001 Furman graduate, will be presented Friday, Nov. 8 at 6:30 p.m. in the Roe Art Building. The gallery talk, which begins at 7 p.m. on Nov. 8, is part of Furman\u2019s Cultural Life Program.<\/p>\n<p>Gambrell\u2019s exhibition, \u201cOf Sky and Earth and Air\u201d is free and open to the public.<\/p>\n<p>Gambrell\u2019s practice as an abstract painter is rooted in the American South.\u00a0His mastery of color is tied to his role as a core member of South Florida\u2019s Miami School, a contemporary painting movement extending the American traditions of color-field painting and lyrical abstraction.<\/p>\n<p>Gambrell\u2019s new body of work is the culmination of a journey that has taken him from the spiritually charged hills of South Carolina, through Miami&#8217;s contemporary art scene and a career of teaching across the South, to the establishment of a studio in Gambrell\u2019s hometown of West Pelzer, S.C.<\/p>\n<p>Gambrell has lectured nationally and taught for the University of Miami, the University of North Carolina, and the Savannah College of Art and Design.\u00a0He has founded and directed galleries, consulted for galleries and collectors, displayed work in more than 80 exhibitions, and mentored hundreds of young artists.<\/p>\n<p>Gambrell studied painting and art history at Furman University and earned an MFA in painting from the University of Miami.<\/p>\n<p>For more information about the exhibition, contact Furman\u2019s Department of Art at 864-294-2074.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>New abstract paintings by Furman University alumnus Andy Gambrell will be on display Nov. 7 through Dec. 13 in Thompson Gallery of the Roe Art Building on campus.
