An informal inauguration of the WGS-LGBTIQ Resource Room (Women\u2019s, Gender and Sexuality Minor, and Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex and Queer Resource Room) will be held Thursday, Oct. 17 at 2:30 p.m. in Furman Hall room 138.<\/p>\n

Open to all, the dedication will be led by Dean Beckford. Light refreshments will be served, and a slide show will be presented.<\/p>\n

The opening of the WGS-LGBTIQ Resource Room marks the culmination of many years of lobbying on the part of students, staff and faculty to create a space for alternative thinking and ways of being. The student organization EROS (Encouraging Respect of Sexualities), as well as the WGS faculty will use this space for meetings and events throughout the year.<\/p>\n

The space will also be important for the upcoming Associated Colleges of the South Gender Conference to be hosted by Furman April 4 – 5, 2014.<\/p>\n

Dean Beckford is recognized for his support in securing the space and initial provisions for the Resource Room. Also instrumental in launching the room are Modern Languages and Literatures professor Sofia Kearns, and English and Asian Studies professor Karni Bhati, co-chairs of the Women’s, Gender, and Sexualities\u00a0Minor.<\/p>\n

As the Resource Room is a work in progress, donations from alumni and others are being sought to finance the completion of the room\u2019s furnishings, and to fund future events.<\/p>\n
