The Furman Symphony Orchestra will present a concert Friday, Oct. 18 at 8 p.m. in McAlister Auditorium on the Furman University campus.<\/p>\n

The concert is open to the public. Tickets are $12 for adults, $10 for seniors and $5 for students.<\/p>\n

Conducted by Furman music professor Thomas Joiner and featuring Furman harp instructor Anita Burroughs-Price, the orchestra will perform Academic Festival Overture, op. 80 by Brahms, Concerto in B-flat major for Harp, op. 4 by Handel, \u00a0and Tchaikovsky\u2019s \u201cWaltz of the Flowers,\u201d op. 71, from Nutcracker<\/i>, and Symphony No. 2 in C minor, op. 17.<\/p>\n

In the well-known \u201cWaltz of the Flowers,\u201d Burroughs-Price opens with a famous harp cadenza. She is later joined by her five students in a spectacular finish to the piece.<\/p>\n

A graduate of Furman University, Burroughs-Price returned to her alma mater in 1988 to teach harp. Her teacher at Furman was Marjorie Tyre, former harpist of the Philadelphia Orchestra. Burroughs-Price earned a Master of Music from Yale studying under Gloria Agostini.<\/p>\n

A devoted educator, Burroughs-Price previously taught at UNC-CH, UNC-Charlotte, Wake Forest University and the South Carolina Governor\u2019s School for the Arts and Humanities.<\/p>\n

Burroughs-Price is currently principal harpist with the North Carolina Symphony. She has performed as a soloist with North Carolina Symphony, Chamber Orchestra of the Triangle, Raleigh Symphony, Durham Symphony, Hendersonville Symphony, on the North Carolina Sight\u00a0& Sound Concert Series, with South Carolina Chamber Orchestra, and in the Piccolo Spoleto Festival in Charleston.<\/p>\n

She was awarded the Raleigh Medal of Arts, the city\u2019s highest honor, for \u201coutstanding artistry and humanitarian service.\u201d She performs regularly in soup kitchens, prisons, Red Cross hurricane shelters, clinics and at the bedside of terminally ill patients. Her recording, \u201cHealing Touch,\u201d won the 2006 Excellence in Media Silver Angel Award and has raised $20,000 for the Interfaith Food Shuttle, Interact, and New Orleans musicians affected by Hurricane Katrina.<\/p>\n
