{"id":1530,"date":"2016-02-17T19:37:38","date_gmt":"2016-02-18T00:37:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/2016\/02\/17\/a-summer-with-the-stars\/"},"modified":"2022-11-07T14:25:01","modified_gmt":"2022-11-07T19:25:01","slug":"a-summer-with-the-stars","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/a-summer-with-the-stars\/","title":{"rendered":"A summer with the stars"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Through the help of Furman\u2019s internship program, junior Caroline Phillips traveled to Los Angeles, California for a summer internship where she brushed shoulders with Hollywood stars Jay Pharoah, Ne-Yo, John Ham, and Ben Affleck.<\/p>\n<p>The business major worked as one of 40 interns for TBS\u2019s hit late-night talk show <em>Conan<\/em>, hosted by stand-up comedian Conan O\u2019Brien.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt first, I didn\u2019t really know what I wanted to do for the summer\u201d she says. \u201cSusan Zeiger (Furman\u2019s Internship Program Director), told me that each year for the past few years a student from Furman has\u00a0interned with <em>Conan<\/em>, which gave me a little hope when I was applying. Furman Advantage even paid for the majority of my trip.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While working with the show, she saw Conan frequently, but never had \u201cthat moment where [she] shook his hand and held a twenty-minute conversation. \u00a0He\u2019s too busy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some of the show\u2019s interns were selected to be talent escorts to celebrities for awards shows including the ESPY\u2019s, Do Something, and the Teen Choice Awards.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe just followed the celebs around, made sure they knew where they were going, memorized the venue, things like that.\u201d \u00a0Phillips escorted Saturday Night Live\u2019s Jay Pharoah, and famed R&amp;B singer Ne-Yo. \u00a0Other stars she saw included American actor John Hamm, and Ben Affleck, who will play Batman in The Dark Knight trilogy.<\/p>\n<p>She also saw bands perform during the show, like <em>She &amp; Him<\/em> and <em>Capital Cities, <\/em>two hit indie groups.<\/p>\n<p>Phillips knowledge of the entertainment world was limited prior to the internship.
