Furman University modern languages professor Lourdes Many\u00e9 has been elected to a two-year term as president of the North American Catalan Society (NACS).\u00a0 Many\u00e9 has been serving as treasurer of the organization since 2007.<\/p>\n
Founded in 1978, the NACS is committed to advancing the study of Catalan language and culture in the North American academy. It seeks to foster greater visibility for and dissemination of scholarship in the field of Catalan studies and serves as a central point of reference, as well as a public voice, for a network of scholars in this field.<\/p>\n
Catalan is a Romance language spoken by a population of about ten million people in the eastern part of the Iberian Peninsula (Catalonia, Balearic Islands, most of the Valencia region, and the eastern fringe of Aragon) and the Principality of Andorra. Catalan is also spoken in the French region of Roussillon and the town of Alghero (L\u2019Alguer) on the island of Sardinia.<\/p>\n
Many\u00e9 joined the Furman faculty in 1995. Her academic interests include 20th century Spanish literature, post-war Spanish fiction, exile literature, contemporary Spanish short-story, comparative literature, 20th century Catalan literature, and translation studies. She holds a bachelor\u2019s degree from Universidad Autonoma de Barcelona and a master\u2019s and doctorate from the University of South Carolina. Many\u00e9 lives in Greenville.<\/p>\n
