{"id":1387,"date":"2013-06-20T19:43:59","date_gmt":"2013-06-20T23:43:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/2013\/06\/20\/paladins-shift-league-play-to-fall\/"},"modified":"2022-11-07T19:51:10","modified_gmt":"2022-11-08T00:51:10","slug":"paladins-shift-league-play-to-fall","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/paladins-shift-league-play-to-fall\/","title":{"rendered":"Paladins shift league play to fall"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In accordance with the Southern Rugby Conference (SRC) and other national Division II conferences, the Furman Rugby team <a href=\"http:\/\/newsimg.furman.edu.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/crest.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7070 alignright lazyload\" title=\"crest\" data-src=\"http:\/\/newsimg.furman.edu.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/crest.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"294\" height=\"380\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 294px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 294\/380;\" \/><\/a>will now play its matrix games in the fall.<\/p>\n<p>The shift, largely driven by conferences in the Northeast and Midwest due to weather concerns, was approved this month by USA Rugby. Furman Coach John Roberts, who also serves as SRC commissioner, says campus football Saturdays will create scheduling challenges for many Southern schools.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor years we have enjoyed developing our teams in the fall, scheduling friendly games and playing to win in the spring,\u201d says Roberts. \u201cBut now that things have changed, we\u2019ll adapt, move on and make the best of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The SRC champion will be determined November 16. The USA Rugby Div. II champion will be crowned December 8.<\/p>\n<p>The SRC has made tentative plans to develop a series of 7s tournaments in the spring that will lead to a conference 7s championship. Teams, too, will likely schedule friendly 15s games in the spring.<\/p>\n<p>Roberts says the Paladins are positioned to have a strong team in the fall. Every player returns from last year\u2019s team, which finished the spring with a 3-1 record and was a tie-breaker short of advancing to the SRC final four.<\/p>\n<p>A few players who were unavailable late in the Spring season due to travel abroad studies and injuries will rejoin the team in the fall. The Paladins also will welcome its first recruiting class, which includes five players, in August.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will have a more experienced and talented team in the fall. Our numbers are normally stronger then,\u201d says Roberts. \u201cI am really excited with the direction we are going.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Paladins\u2019 fall schedule is now posted on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.furmanrugby.com\">website<\/a> and includes home matches against Western Carolina (September 21), Elon (October 5) and Appalachian State (October 26). The Furman team travels to Lander (September 28) and East Carolina (October 19).
