McDowell<\/p><\/div>\n<p>OCTOBER 20, 2011<br \/>\nby Vince Moore, Media Relations Director<\/p>\n<p>Furman president Rod Smolla was in attendance at the Media Institute\u2019s annual Friends &amp; Benefactors Awards Banquet in Washington, D.C., this week to present the Freedom of Speech Award to FCC Commissioner Robert M. McDowell.<\/p>\n<p>The banquet took place Oct. 18 at the Fairmont Hotel.<\/p>\n<p>AT&amp;T CEO Randall Stephenson was also honored at the ceremony with the American Horizon Award, which was presented by Benjamin T. Jealous, president and CEO of the NAACP.<\/p>\n<p>The master of ceremonies was communications attorney and former FCC chairman Richard E. Wiley. \u00a0\u00a0Senator Mark Warner (D-Va.), a member of the Senate Commerce Committee\u2019s Subcommittee on Communications and Technology, delivered keynote remarks.<\/p>\n<p>President Smolla is nationally recognized as a scholar, teacher and writer, and is one of America\u2019s foremost experts on issues relating to freedom of speech, academic freedom and freedom of the press. \u00a0\u00a0He is the author of numerous books, including <em>Free Speech in an Open Society<\/em>, <em>Jerry Falwell v. Larry Flynt: The First Amendment on Trial <\/em>and <em>Deliberate Intent<\/em>.\u00a0 His latest book, <em>The Constitution Goes to College: Five Constitutional Ideas That Have Shaped the American University<\/em>, was published in 2011 by New York University Press.<\/p>\n<p>The Freedom of Speech Award recognizes an individual who has made important contributions to the advancement and protection of free speech.\u00a0 McDowell has served on the Federal Communications Commission since 2006.\u00a0 He has fostered free speech by helping consumers expand their communications choices, and by vigorously opposing regulatory policies that would amount to government censorship of media content.<\/p>\n<p>Randall L.
