Tocqueville on American Ambition,\u201d is free and open to the public. It is sponsored by Furman\u2019s political science department and its Tocqueville Lecture Series.<\/p>\n<p>Faulkner explores Alexis de Tocqueville\u2019s <em>Democracy in America<\/em> by investigating whether moral grandeur, on the model of Aristotle\u2019s great-souled man, is possible in a democratic society.<\/p>\n<p>Faulkner is author of <em>The Case for Greatness: Honorable Ambition and Its Critics<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Francis Bacon and the Project of Progress<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Richard Hooker and the Politics of a Christian England<\/em>, and\u00a0<em>The Jurisprudence of John Marshall<\/em>.\u00a0He has also co-edited two books,\u00a0<em>America at Risk<\/em> and <em>Marshall&#8217;s Life of George Washington<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Faulkner was a Marshall Scholar at Oxford and has held fellowships from the Ford, Mellon, Earhart and Bradley foundations and the National Endowment for the Humanities.
