Gustavo Coelho, assistant professor of water resources in the Department of Earth, Environmental and Sustainability Sciences, was interviewed by Fox Carolina about the potential dangers of the Lake Conestee Dam, a structure built in the 19th century. The water in Lake Conestee, held back by the dam, has high levels of heavy metals from the long-ago textile industry. Coelho, who worked as a water resources engineer in Sao Paulo, Brazil, before earning his doctorate at George Mason University, told viewers the dam needs to be monitored closely.
