Furman University’s David Fleming, an associate professor of politics and international affairs, goes on record in The Greenville News about the growing field of potential Republican candidates for the 2024 presidential election.

Commenting on candidate Nikki Haley and Tim Scott, who hasn’t made his bid official, Fleming said, “They both have challenges, primarily with the popularity of Trump among Republicans – particularly in South Carolina. They’ll start behind a little, but there is a lot of time before voters start voting.”

Fleming noted that GOP candidates will tread lightly and take care not to attack each other while they jockey for the second spot on the ticket.

“If it is Trump (who wins the nomination), I don’t think he would likely take kindly on attacks from opponents,” Fleming said. “Both Haley and Scott have been careful about their critiques, but that could change.”

Fleming is a senior researcher at The Riley Institute at Furman University.
