DOUG MACDONALD, professor emeritus of philosophy, died Nov. 8, 2022, in Greenville, South Carolina. He was a member of the philosophy department at Furman for 29 years, serving as chair for a period, before he retired in 1999. His courses ranged from Renaissance and Modern Philosophy to “Law, Justice, and State” and included a significant contribution to Furman’s curriculum: a medical ethics course, incorporating hospital clinical rotations, that remains unique among undergraduate liberal arts and sciences colleges. He was a charter member of the South Carolina Medical Association Ethics Committee, where he provided philosophical groundwork for discussions at monthly meetings and annual retreats.

MacDonald’s commitment to undergraduate education was further represented by two endowments at Furman: the Willis A. and Winifred B. MacDonald Scholarship, in memory of his parents, and the Occasions for Philosophy Speaker Fund.
