Furman fans spread support after loss to San Diego State

In the minutes leading up to and after round of 32 play in March Madness, The Greenville News shot photos and spoke to Furman University students and staff gathered at Paladin Stadium and a packed Yee-Haw Brewing Company in downtown Greenville. After a stunning win over the University of Virginia Cavaliers in the first round, the Paladins were outmatched in the meeting with the San Diego State Aztecs on Saturday, March 18. Reporter Joanna Johnson and photographer McKenzie Lange captured the drama for the article that appeared in the Independent Mail.

Local TV news station WSPA 7News also covered the watch party at Yee-Haw Brewing and spoke to several students.

“It’s been over 40 years that we’ve made it this far, I’m proud,” said Nathan Ofotokun, a junior at Furman.

“It’s really exciting, especially it being my senior year,” said Delilah Evelyn ’23. “I think everyone talking about this year, every time I see my graduation year, it’s going to be like, oh my gosh, that was the year we were in March Madness.”

Sophomore Rob McCracken said, “We’re kind of like the Bad News Bears here, I don’t even really think we’re supposed to be in March Madness. We pulled through, this is crazy, it’s been 40 years since this has happened.”
