The Furman Paladins are the top favorite to beat a highly ranked first-round opponent, according to bracket analysis reported by The Athletic (subscription required). The team has a 39.3 percent chance of beating the University of Virginia Cavaliers on Thursday in Orlando, the full opening day of the tournament.
The Athletic also praised Furman math professors John Harris, Liz Bouzarth and Kevin Hutson, who provided the mathematical model The Athletic analysis is based on. But Furman’s math connections in no way influenced Furman’s odds; the statistics speak for themselves.
