Several members of the local media turned out for Furman University’s annual Joseph Vaughn Day celebration, a tribute to the first Black undergraduate to enroll at the university. The event also included recognition of Trustee Emeritus Merl Code, who received an honorary doctorate from Furman’s Elizabeth Davis.

Code, counsel at Ogletree, Deakins, Nash, Smoak, and Stewart, and former municipal judge, spoke to WYFF about the meaning of the celebration. “I think what this [event] says is that we’re on the right path,” Code said. “We have not reached our destination in terms of human relations with each other, how we help others grow. Some of the things that we are trying to do now are in the formative stages – we aren’t through. We are just going to need more soldiers to help us in the battle.”
