“President to President” is a higher education thought leadership series written by university presidents for university presidents. Each year, the series focuses on a different aspect of the higher education experience. The 2022-2023 edition of “President to President,” titled “The Well Campus: An In-Depth Look,” offers a thoughtful examination of what it means to have a “well” campus.

In the fifth chapter of the series, Furman University President Elizabeth Davis, Ph.D., writes about “Effecting Change While Respecting the Past.” She describes how to navigate the complex changes that are often a necessary step toward becoming a successful modern university while also respecting the culture and history of the campus. She shares practical strategies for working with students, faculty, alumni, and community members to ensure that changes are respectful, positive, and aligned with the college’s current values.
