Ahead of Wednesday’s debate between incumbent South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster and Democratic challenger Joe Cunningham, Joseph Bustos of The State wrote an article about how the two would address issues such as abortion and whether age limits should be imposed for elected officials. Bustos spoke to Furman University’s Danielle Vinson, a professor of politics and international affairs for the piece.

With the abortion issue at an impasse in both the state House and Senate, Vinson said how the political football will play in South Carolina’s election remains to be seen. “It can cut in interesting ways depending on how restrictive the states decide to be.”

At age 40, Cunningham supports a 72-year age limit for elected officials, while McMaster, age 75, insists experience matters in public office and should be weighed when electing a leader. Vinson offered her take, saying, “Talking about a candidate’s age can be tricky. You can’t be rude about it, but the only way Cunningham has a chance is if he gets people who voted for McMaster in the past to vote against him, (but) also if he turns out those folks who don’t typically vote, and that’s a lot of younger people.”

The piece also ran in The Sun News.
