The horrors of war: Tending peace, sending support for Ukraine

In a piece she contributed to the Tallahassee Democrat, Candace (Carter) McKibben ’77 reflects on the “heartbreak and violence of war” from reading about it during her freshman year at Furman University, to 9/11 and the deployment of her son to Iraq, to now, with the war raging in Ukraine. Citing a promise made by the protagonist in “All Quiet on the Western Front,” McKibben wrote, “Whether hatred or greed or some other complexity of politics and power provoked the assault on Ukraine, I pray that more of us will make that same vow to fight against that which causes us to attack others and, rather, put our energy into loving.”

A biology and pre-med major at Furman, McKibben is an ordained minister and pastor of Tallahassee Fellowship. She holds an M.Div. from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.
