On Friday, the Yard Show Celebration allowed students to experience one facet of Black culture – the yard show. Furman’s two Black Greek Letter Organizations, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., performed alongside organizations from surrounding institutions at the Joseph Vaughn Plaza. A yard show is a display of Black Greek organizations’ steps and strolls, each a form of dance that expresses members’ pride and involvement in their chapter and organization.

The celebration was hosted by Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., the Student Diversity Council, the NAACP, the Student League for Black Culture, and the Center for Inclusive Communities. Students enjoyed events throughout Black History Month, including one that focused on the significance of the Black Panther movement, a panel discussion about Black Greek organizations, a reflective walk, a Black Girl Enneagram workshop and several others. Black-owned food trucks and vendors also visited campus.
