Richard Cullen to become Youngkin’s counselor

The Commonwealth of Virginia’s governor-elect Glenn Youngkin has selected former Virginia Attorney General Richard Cullen as counselor to the governor. On Jan. 14, Cullen, a 1971 Furman University graduate and former member of the Furman Board of Trustees, will step away from law firm McGuireWoods, where he serves as chairman and has enjoyed a 45-year career.

Joining McGuireWoods in 1977, Cullen served as U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia from 1991 to 1994, and from 1997 to 1998, as Virginia attorney general.

Cullen majored in political science and played varsity football at Furman. In 1977, he received a law degree from the University of Richmond, where he was editor-in-chief of the law review and a member of ODK. In 1998, he was awarded the University of Richmond Distinguished Alumni Award. He also received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from Virginia Union University.
