Amid a global supply chain crisis, how New Orleans port has avoided major shipping delays

New Orleans native and Furman University sociologist Kenneth Kolb has coauthored a piece for The Times-Picayune about supply chain woes at ports throughout the United States. A paywall-free version of the article is available here.

In the story, which made front page news of The Times-Picayune print edition, Kolb describes how his hometown Port of New Orleans has averted the logjams seen in other harbors across the United States. He attributes the gluts of languishing container ships to “the sheer success—and vulnerability—of the globalized economy, which itself is partly traceable to two breakthroughs from the 1960s and 1970s – containerization and just-in-time manufacturing.”
