SC Democrat Joe Cunningham takes aim at McMaster, announces bid for governor

Republican Gov. Henry McMaster might be the longest-serving governor in the state of South Carolina if he holds his seat in next year’s gubernatorial election and completes his second full term. But Democratic challenger and former U.S. Representative Joe Cunningham, who announced his candidacy today, says McMaster’s tenure is part of the state’s problems. The Post and Courier spoke to Danielle Vinson ’89, a professor of politics and international affairs at Furman University, about Cunningham’s bid. “It’s an uphill climb because Republicans have locked down this state mostly on social and national issues,” she said. “But Cunningham has done a good job of walking that line.”
