Jackson Pearce ’18, a third-year medical student at Medical University of South Carolina, has been named a 2021-2022 Luce Scholar. One of only 18 scholars selected from a pool of 164 candidates, Pearce will take a break from medical school to spend roughly 13 months learning the culture, language and customs of a selected region in Asia.

The Luce Scholars Program aims to bolster the understanding of Asia among potential leaders in America. The program provides stipends, language training, and individualized professional placement in Asia for 15-18 Luce Scholars annually.

Pearce joins the five other Furman Luce Scholars who have been named since 1996. Besides demonstrating leadership qualities in the public sphere, fellowship candidates must also meet another criterion – little to no exposure to Asia.
