Lillian Brock Flemming ’71, ’75 (M), ’14 (H) reflects on Joseph Vaughn Day at Furman University on Jan. 29. In an interview outside Furman gates, Flemming told FOX Carolina that “we need more Joseph Vaughns.” About Vaughn ’68, the first Black student to enroll at the university, Flemming said, “He was an outstanding person that made all children understand that they could not survive in this world without each other. Their color had nothing to do with it. Their culture, where they came from, had nothing to do with it. They have to live together in peace, or we will not be able to survive in this world.”
