Teachers are asked to accept unfair nobility tax

Citing a Pew Center Research survey, Cynthia King notes that teaching ranks only second to military service on the spectrum of most noble contributions to society. In an opinion piece appearing in Jacksonville.com, King, Furman University communication studies professor and chair, says the high regard for teachers is undercut by a “nobility tax” – one levied by the very society that sings teachers’ praises. She says underpayment of teachers and overall cuts to education funding amount to a tax on teachers who serve as instructors, disciplinarians, tutors, first-aid givers, motivators, consolers, surrogate parents, role models, and now, online teaching experts.
