You can’t compromise with racism

Furman University is mentioned in article appearing in Diverse: Issues in Higher Education about symbols that pay homage to slave owners and Confederate war heroes on college campuses. The authors point to Furman and about 50 other universities in the United States that are actively reckoning with and taking action in regard to their historical ties to slavery.

The authors say efforts like Furman’s Task Force on Slavery and Justice are welcome, but “should serve as starting points in a broader effort to improve the campus experience of students of color.” The piece goes on to admonish campus leaders across the United States to not only “address the historical legacies of White supremacy and exclusion but also the current racial inequities that limit access, affordability, and success for many students of color.”
