Thinking critically about costumes and parties

The Greenville News reached out to Furman for a story about how students’ Halloween costumes can be tolerant and respectful. Deborah Allen, director of the Center for Inclusive Communities, and Kelsey Milian, president of the Student Diversity Council, commented.

“We’ve had many conversations about the balance of freedom of speech and the type of community we want to build on our campus,” Allen said. “There’s so much historical context when it comes to these things, and there’s nuance and there’s gray areas too. You can honor or show appreciation for someone without wearing facial paint to match their skin.”
