Furman alum Thomas Cullen was featured in an article in The Washington Post Magazine titled “The Trump Appointee Who’s Putting White Supremacists in Jail.” As the chief federal prosecutor for the Western District of Virginia, Cullen “is on a mission: to use the federal judiciary to strike a blow against mounting white nationalist violence.” And that started with prosecuting some of the more violent protesters at the 2017 white-supremacist rally in Charlottesville.

Cullen graduated from Furman in 2000 with a degree in history and received his law degree from the College of William and Mary.
