Alum Claire Gibson to read from her new novel April 16

Claire Gibson, a 2009 Furman University graduate, will return to campus to discuss her debut novel, “Beyond the Point,” Tuesday, April 16, at 5 p.m. in Room 214 of Furman Hall.

Gibson will read from the novel and then participate in a Q&A with the audience. The event, which is free and open to the public, will be followed by a reception in Furman Hall 217.

Gibson’s debut novel is available at the Barnes & Noble Bookstore on campus.

Copies of the book, published by HarperCollins, will be available at the event and at the Barnes & Noble Bookstore on campus.

“Beyond the Point” is set at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, where three women—a nationally-ranked point guard, the granddaughter of an Army general and a rebellious Homecoming Queen—are brought together in a story of friendship, heartbreak and resilience.

Gibson, who graduated from Furman with a degree in Asian studies and politics and international affairs, is a writer and journalist based in Nashville, Tennessee. Born and raised at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, she had always wanted to write a story that honored her childhood home and the women there who inspired her.

Her writing has been featured in The Washington Post, The Christian Science Monitor, The Tennessean and Entrepreneur Magazine, among many other publications.

Gibson’s reading is sponsored by Furman’s Department of English, Department of Military Science and The Tocqueville Program.
