Budget cuts threaten afterschool programs

Furman Riley Institute’s Cathy Stevens and Eric Vanden Heuvel of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Green Bay (Wisconsin), author an opinion piece in digital magazine Youth Today about afterschool and summer programs. Citing 2018 survey data, the authors stress the need for increased investment in affordable non-school programs. Stevens, director of the White-Riley-Peterson Policy (WRP) Fellowship, and Vanden Heuvel, a 2018-19 WRP Policy Fellow, said, “We’ve seen firsthand that when students participate in afterschool and summer programming, they develop in-demand skills that will aid them their entire lives in school, college and the workplace.”
