Ceramic works by Kimberly Riner on display in Thompson Gallery

The Furman University Department of Art will host ceramic sculptor Kimberly Riner in an exhibition Nov. 12-Dec. 7 in Thompson Gallery of the Roe Art Building on campus. Regular Thompson Gallery hours are Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. A reception including a talk with the artist is set for Monday, Nov. 12, 6-7:30 p.m. in the Roe Art Building.

The reception and the exhibition, “Human Fragility,” are free and open to the public.

Based in Statesboro, Georgia, Riner creates mixed media ceramic installations that document the journey of loss and grief as experienced through the death of loved ones. Through her art, she reflects upon the variety of effects loss has on the survivors.

According to her statement, each installation presents a perspective associated with grief as an intuitive response. The works are informed by cultural norms associated with mourning. By investigating specific ceremonies, rituals and interactions, she constructs pieces that bridge the line between memory and memorial.

Riner is visual arts director at Averitt Center for the Arts in Statesboro. She has held faculty positions at Georgia Southern University, and Ogeechee Technical College.

She is actively involved in growing the art scene in the Statesboro area where she has worked with ArtsFest, Summer Studios and Creative Art Studio. Most recently, Riner opened the Averitt Center’s new visual arts facility: The Roxie Remley Center for Fine Arts.

Her work has been exhibited both nationally and internationally and is held in private collections. Exhibition venues include Mason City, Iowa; Atlanta, Georgia; North Charleston, South Carolina; Lake City, South Carolina; Cochran, Georgia; and Sheffield, England.

She received her Master of Fine Arts from Georgia Southern University in 3D art with an emphasis in ceramics.
