Storm Update: Furman open for normal operations

Furman University is open for normal operations. Faculty and staff should use caution when traveling to campus, avoiding possible flooded areas. Students and employees should be aware of their surroundings while walking on campus during strong winds and rain.

Tropical Storm Michael was moving quickly, passing through our area by mid-day, tracking to the northeast. Furman and the Greenville area today expected to receive 1-2 inches of rain and experience sustained winds of 16-23 mph.

University officials will continue to monitor conditions on campus and provide extended shuttle service (15-passenger van) between the residence halls and the main areas of campus from 7:30 a.m. today through Friday at 2 a.m.

Furman will provide updates at this site if the operating schedule should change. Students, faculty and staff will also receive text and email alerts in emergency situations. Furman University is continuing to monitor the forecast for Hurricane Michael, which is expected to make landfall along the Florida Panhandle today.

The storm is expected to track to the northeast once it arrives on land and move through South Carolina as a tropical storm on Thursday. If the storm continues on its predicted path, Furman and the Greenville area could see sustained winds of 15-20 mph and 2-3 inches of rain. Students are advised to be aware of their surroundings when they are on campus during strong winds and rain.

At this point, Furman expects to operate under normal conditions throughout the week. According to the latest information from the National Hurricane Center, the storm was in the Gulf of Mexico heading north toward the Florida Panhandle, with landfall expected sometime Wednesday.
