Classes canceled Thursday and Friday in preparation for Florence, but university to remain open
Furman University has canceled classes and all required student activities for Thursday and Friday, Sept. 13-14, in preparation for Hurricane Florence, which is expected to impact the Greenville area this weekend.
While day and evening classes are canceled, the university will remain open Thursday and Friday and all employees should report for work. Furman will continue to monitor the storm and announce any further decisions on possible campus closings by mid-day Friday.
Classes have been canceled to give students ample time, in consultation with their families, to decide whether they want to travel away from the path of the storm. The university will continue to offer campus services to students who remain on campus. (See below for more information about services and activities.)
The memorial service to remember the life of Reilly Shea Simmons originally scheduled for tomorrow will be postponed. The campus community will be informed of the new date and time once the service has been rescheduled.
Students remaining on campus through the weekend should be aware of their surroundings during inclement weather, which includes the possibility of falling trees and limbs, localized flooding or downed electrical lines. More information about hurricane preparedness is available at the National Weather Service.
Furman will provide regular updates on the Furman news site. Students, faculty and staff will also receive text and email alerts in emergency situations. For up-to-date weather alerts and other emergency notifications, follow Furman on Twitter and Facebook or call the Furman weather line at 864-294-3766.
